Local Programs and Internships
AHEC Community Health Immersion (formerly WI Express)
Winter/Spring/Summer
1 credit (Nutr Sci 421)
Multiple short-term immersion programs that provide students the opportunity to learn about Wisconsin’s diverse communities and cultures while they explore health care delivery and public health in medically underserved areas. Both in-person and virtual options, but availability is primarily limited to virtual programs. Admitted students will enroll in a special online section of Nutr Sci 421 during the spring term. Application deadlines are typically in November and March, but students should check the program website for complete deadline and application information. Note: Because in-person programs have limited capacity, students should be sure to rank at least one remote/virtual option among their preferences when applying.

Center for Patient Partnerships: Resource Navigator Program
Fall/Spring/Summer
3 credits (Legal St 473)
As Resource Navigators, students will work alongside the healthcare system by supporting patients with their social and legal needs. Navigators help patients connect with needed community resources and follow-up with them regularly to help them stay healthy. Students learn about the important links between basic needs and health, interact directly with patients to help them meet their needs, and learn important patient advocacy skills. Admitted students enroll in the Legal St 473 companion course. Application deadlines are typically in November and April, but students should check the program website for complete deadline and application information. Note: for Fall 2023 the Resource Navigator Program is not accepting new students and will not be offering Legal St 473. The program expects to run in Spring 2024, and further updates will be provided in October, 2023.
