Local Field Experience Courses
Nutr Sci 421: Active Citizenship for Health Advocacy
Summer Term – 1 credit
Using a global-to-local approach, this two-week field course (May 26 – June 6, 2025) will explore health advocacy strategies by visiting with local organizations and government agencies addressing health challenges in Madison. Over the course students will develop an advocacy plan on a health issue of their choosing, actively participate in discussions, and build their capacity to impact change.


Nutr Sci 421: Planning Healthy Cities
Summer Term – 1 credit
Two-week summer field course (May 26 – June 6, 2025) on urban environs and city planning from a public health perspective. The course will work with different City of Madison agencies (e.g. Department of Transportation, Public Health Madison Dane County) and community partners to explore different urban design and policy initiatives to improve health outcomes and equity in Madison.
Land Arc 360: Earth Partnership Restoration Education: Indigenous Arts and Sciences
Summer Term – 1 credit
One-week community-based course (June 23-29, 2025) working with Native Nations in Wisconsin and focused on indigenous knowledge, ecological restoration, stewardship, cultural values, and environmental health.


Land Arc 363: Earth Partnership: Restoration Education for Equity and Resilience
Fall Semester – 3 credits
Work with Native Nations and community partners on ecological restoration education and the power of place to work towards social justice and sustainability. Interact with guest speakers and work on community-based stewardship projects.
Nursing 436: Health and Illness Concepts with Individuals, Families, and Communities
Fall/Spring/Summer – 2-4 credits
Second year clinical course only open to students in the Nursing BSN program.
